Graphology is the study of the formations of handwriting to diagnose the personality traits. It is not concerned with any particular style of penmanship; the analysis is not based on whether the handwriting is "beautiful" or "ugly". Graphology studies each handwriting individually and not as belonging to a certain "type". In the early 17th century Camillo Baldo, an Italian scholar, wrote a treatise in which he set down specific rules to follow in making an analysis as an understanding of personality. It was Abbe FLandrin who coined a name for this new science-graphology-by combining the Greek words, grapho (meaning to 'write') and ology ('science').

Handwriting is as much an instinctive individual expression as the way person talks or walks or uses his hands. No matter how a child is taught to write, when he becomes an adult he may make many unconscious changes in the formation of letters, in the size and pressure of the writing.

Graphology is not concerned with the "outer" person; it's function is to find the "inner" personality. The handwriting analyst can do is to tell what the writing reveals and then it is up to one who receives the analysis to benefit by a clearer understanding of himself and others.

Graphology has a definite place in personality testing; it is of valuable use in fields of psychology, personnel selection, and other aspects of personal counseling.

Your handwriting develops right from childhood. When you write, your pen is under the control of the muscles of your fingers, hands and arm. All these body parts are under the control of your mind. The manner in which the pen eventually forms the words must bear a direct relationship to the mind that guides their formation. The brain unconsciously directs each vibration of movement, so we can judge the mental state of the writer. It is a guide to the will power, intellect and emotions of a person.

Graphology can certainly play a crucial role in child development so that a great deal of future sorrow is nipped in the bud. Think of the remedial measures that can be taken with a child just beginning to form his personality Aggression, timidity, health problems that are germinating due to unknown reasons can be detected, corrected or pre-empted.

Handwriting analysis is referred to as Graphology. Handwriting may also be regarded as "brain writing". It is an expression of the whole personality. Writing is expressive movements and these movements have there meanings and interpretations. Graphology is the study of handwriting and the connection it has to a person's behavior.

There are three main systems of graphology.
In Holistic Graphology a persons profile is formed on the basis of Form, Movement and Space. Integrative Graphology is constructed on the basis that specific stroke formations relate to personality traits. Symbolic Analysis is based on the analysis of symbols seen in the handwriting. Every system of graphology has its own vocabulary that makes the meaning those words different.

Graphology is an empirical science and not just an intuitive method of studying character. Coupled with psychology and the knowledge of human behavior and cognitive senses graphology can be used for many purposes like recruitment, marriage compatibility, career guidance, personality development, motivation guides, child development and help in solving criminal cases, among others.
